However, she’s quite clever and resourceful and often saves Wang Lung in difficult situations by revealing talents he doesn’t know she has. She’s not physically attractive, which Wang Lung comes to fault her for. Her father sold her as a slave in a year of famine, and she works in the House of Hwang until she marries Wang Lung. She’s a quiet, hardworking woman who has suffered much even before she comes to Wang Lung’s house.
