So today I am going to share with you a little about this wonderful book and give you my tips for using this book to expand speech and language skills in young children. Even my 2 year old sits through all three books and comments along! (The kid now has the word “Gruffalo” in his vocabulary as well as “giant”!) I very badly want to go back to Amazon and order a few more of her books (And likely will because they are WELL PRICED!!)Īnyway, here in my home we read all three books every night for over a week. Īnd now, I must admit, I am a little in love with this author. When I finally made the connection that she was the author of Room on the Broom, I got really excited! I ran off to Amazon and quickly ordered three of her books: The Gruffalo, The Gruffalo’s Child and The Spiffiest Giant in Town. Although she is best-known for her picture books, Julia also writes longer novels, plays and songs. Julia is a British author whose books include The Gruffalo, The Gruffalo’s Child and one of our favorite books around here, Room on the Broom. Another idea would be to create lots of shadow puppets and retell the story. This month for the Virtual Book Club for Kids, we are spotlighting Julia Donaldson. We loved playing with our Gruffalo’s Child shadow puppets. If you have snow ( or fake snow ) make different animal footprints in the snow. This Gruffalo coding activity from JDaniel4’s Mom looks great. There are also some lovely learning ideas on the Room on the Broom website. You could dissect a flower, make a pinecone weather station or search for twigs of different sizes.Ī balancing or stacking activity would work brilliantly for Room on the Broom too – coming soon!

The animals all throw an item into the witches potion at the end. Oobleck ( cornflour/cornstarch and water ) coloured brown would be perfect to recreate the scene where the animals rise out of the mud to scare the dragon. We love this Room on the Broom sensory bin from Still Playing School. If you’re looking for book themed science investigations you might also like our collection of Fairy Tale experiments for kids and Fairy Tale STEM ideas.

All my children have loved Julia Donaldson books, especially the Gruffalo, so as it’s almost World Book Day I’ve searched the web for my favourite Julia Donaldson science experiments and activities.
